The aim of this course it to introduce students to Modernization in literature with focus on Drama. This covers the era from the end of the 19th Century to the middle of the 20th Century. Students study three texts written by three different playwrights. Each play shows a major modern trend in the modern theatre.

In this course, students are introduced to the main characteristics of the different significant periods of American Literature from the 17th to the 20th century. The main focus is on the changes which took place in both the form and the content of the literary texts of these periods. The influence of some European schools of thought will also be addressed. All these aims are to be achieved through reading and analyzing texts by major American writers. These texts include short stories, medium-length essays, popular poems, and one-act plays.
